What's New in the TIBCO Spotfire 3.0 Platform

In addition to enhanced architecture in the Spotfire Server to support enterprise scalability, the TIBCO Spotfire 3.0 release includes many new features for end users, administrators and developers.

Spotfire Developer

Custom Visualization Features

The API has been extended to provide additional support for visualization development. Features like reacting to filtering, marking and highlighting operations, support for drag and drop operations, display of context menu framework commands, use of custom help, and support for custom tools are now available. The Custom Scatter Plot example in the SDK has been greatly expanded to implement these features, and also provide an example of a Spotfire Web Player visualization view.

  • Creating a Visualization
A visualization is a visual displaying data in Spotfire. A custom visualization defines a unique visualization, implementing model, view, and possibly using additional components.
  • How to Create a Visualization Model
A visualization model manages the state of a visualization. It is also expected to be capable of drawing itself.
  • How to Create a Visualization View
A visualization view handles user input and is responsible for drawing the visualization in the user interface.

Custom Export

  • How to Create an Export Tool
This tutorial describes how to create a tool for Spotfire Professional and Spotfire Web Player that exports the active page in the analysis to an HTML page.

Package Builder

  • Spotfire Package Builder
Spotfire Package Builder provides a framework for developing, debugging, packaging and deploying extensions to Spotfire. It is an important tool when adding custom capabilities to the Spotfire platform.
Package Builder 3.0 requires selection of the intended client: TIBCO Spotfire Professional with Enterprise Player or TIBCO Spotfire Web Player, or both. In addition, the Spotfire Web Player server provides the Web Player Upgrade Tool to download and install packages deployed to a Spotfire Server for a Web Player extension project.

Treemaps are ideal for displaying large amounts of hierarchically structured (tree-structured) data. The space in the visualization is split up into rectangles that are sized and ordered by a quantitative variable:

Map Chart Features

Map charts in Spotfire 3.0 provide user experience enhancements, mainly region coloring and navigation features like pan and zoom. Also structurally the 3.0 map chart is more versatile: Map data is stored as a data table, removing the need for embedding map data. ESRI Shape files (SHP) can be imported, or indeed dropped directly on the application to create a map chart. Furthermore, the reading of map data from Well Known Binary files (WKB) is supported, and map data is internally converted to this format.

Error Bars

Error bar indicators

Error bars indicate the estimated error in a measurement. These uncertainty indicators apply in Spotfire bar charts, line charts, and scatter plots.

User Interfaces: The Spotfire Library features a new Administration UI. The Open UI provides features such as opening both analysis files and information links, and powerful search capabilities, like dependencies search. The Save UI enables the setting of access rights for analyses.

API: The TIBCO Spotfire Professional command line interface provides the new uri parameter, enabling the opening of an analysis or information link in the library, and Library is also available programmatically using the C# API:

Information Designer

The much improved Information Designer UI features the search capabilities, folder structure and access control as the library.

TIBCO Spotfire Web Player 3.0

The Web Player UI supports images in tables, and the DETAILS-ON-DEMAND panel provides the option to export the data to tables. Other UI improvements include support for branding, login prompting for data sources, and a UI for scheduled and periodic updates.

Periodic and Event Driven Update

In addition to the UI for scheduled and periodic updates, updates can be triggered by external events:

  • Periodic and Event Driven Updates
An external process may update a Spotfire Web Player analysis. The EMS Updater in the Spotfire Web Player server may be used to act on EMS MapMessages, or, alternatively, the Update Analysis Web Service may respond to web service calls.

Upgrade Tool

The Spotfire Web Player server can be updated by deploying packages to the Spotfire Server, and then running the Web Player server Upgrade Tool:

TIBCO Spotfire Server 3.0

The new TIBCO Spotfire Server 3.0 has most of the APIs in common with the TIBCO Spotfire Analytics Server 10.1, but behind the surface it is much revised. It supports domain level administration, clustering and fail-over. It also features an improved Spotfire Library with a new access control mechanism and the capability to store both analysis files and information links. Finally, there is a set of configuration user interfaces simplifying setup.

  • Spotfire Server
The TIBCO Spotfire Server is a server component in the TIBCO Spotfire Platform. When users start TIBCO Spotfire Professional, they are asked to log in to a Spotfire Server. While it is possible to work offline, every user must log in the first time the client is started to set up correct licensing. Spotfire Server also provides capabilities not available in the client: User Services, Deployment Services, Library Services, and Information Services.
